Walmart Mexico has announced plans to open 22 new stores across the state of Nuevo Leon in 2023, as part of an investment in the region’s infrastructure. The company will invest over 1.8 billion pesos (around $97 million) in Nuevo Leon, with the new stores including Bodega Aurrera, Bodega Aurrera Express, Mi Bodega Aurrera, Sam’s Club, and Walmart Supercenter units. These openings will create more than 1,000 direct jobs and 240 indirect jobs in the state.

The announcement was made by Walmart during the 12th anniversary of its Distribution Centre in Monterrey, in the presence of Nuevo Leon governor Samuel Garcia Sepulveda and Victor Fuentes Solis, senator of Mexico, among other dignitaries, the company said in a press release.

Walmart Mexico is investing over 1.8 billion pesos (around $97 million) to open 22 new stores in the state of Nuevo Leon in 2023, including Bodega Aurrera, Sam’s Club, and Walmart Supercenter units. This investment will create over 1,000 direct jobs and 240 indirect jobs. The state will receive 6.6 per cent of the $1.4 billion investment in Mexico by 2023.

The investment in Nuevo Leon is part of Walmart Mexico’s larger plan to invest $1.4 billion in the country by 2023. The state will receive 6.6 per cent of that investment. Walmart began operations in Nuevo Leon 31 years ago with the opening of Sam’s Club Gonzalitos in October 1992. It currently operates 349 stores and clubs, as well as three Distribution Centres, generating more than 13,000 permanent direct jobs.

“With the announcement of the 22 units we will open in 2023, Nuevo Leon will consolidate its position as the state with the second largest number of Sam’s Club stores and clubs in Mexico, where we serve more than half a million customers and members on a daily basis,” said Loureiro. The investment will also help the company strengthen its presence in the country and expand its offerings to Mexican consumers.
