You might be surprised to learn that removing facial hair is GOAT (greatest of all times, in case you’re not tuned in to Gen-Z lingo) if you’re trying to get skin that is super soft and smooth. But there are several options available when it comes to removing facial hair, which sometimes creates confusion. You may also wonder if removing unwanted hair from your face is good for your skin or not.
Health Shots reached out to renowned dermatologist Dr Nivedita Dadu, Founder and Chairman of Dadu Medical Centre to understand the advantages and disadvantages of removing facial hair.
Dr Dadu says, “When it comes to facial hair, even today most women are quite sCeptical of using razors or any other methods due to widely-believed myths. For instance, it’s a common misconception that shaving facial hair causes it to regrow thicker. Most of the myths about removing facial hair are totally untrue. Leaving them behind, here we’ve listed down all the pros and cons of removing facial hair so you may decide what’s best for you.”
Advantages of removing facial hair
There are several methods of removing facial hair. The benefits and side effects depend on the method that you are using. Since facial skin is quite sensitive, shaving is the easiest and most efficient way to remove facial hair. In fact, it is completely painless and can be carried out quickly. Here are some benefits of removing facial hair!
1. Glowing skin
There is a misconception that removing facial hair, especially with a razor, will make your skin darker. Turns out, shaving aids in the removal of facial hair as well as the accumulation of debris, dead skin cells, and excess oil on the skin’s surface, revealing a healthier, more radiant layer of skin beneath.
2. Easy to apply makeup
Since removing facial hair makes your skin smooth, it gives a smoother application of other cosmetic products such as concealers and foundations. In fact, you may end up using less makeup because it’s so easy to apply and blend.
3. Removes dark hair
Your skin’s radiance is somewhat influenced by your facial hair. So, when you get rid of them, you also get rid of that bothersome thick, dark hair. This enhances the appearance of your skin.
Side effects of removing facial hair
While shaving your face has some advantages, there are also some drawbacks. These are them:
1. Grows back quickly
Shaving causes facial hair to regrow more quickly than waxing or threading because it simply removes hair off the skin’s surface without uprooting it. Dr Dadu agrees and adds, “Shaving only cuts the strand from the surface, so hair reappears quickly. For this reason, shaving needs to be done frequently.”
2. Skin issues
Razor: If your technique is incorrect when using the razor to remove facial hair, it could lead to wounds or razor burns.
Waxing: Waxing is also one of the methods for removing facial hair, and is usually done at a salon by an expert. Using wax on your face has direct contact with the skin, so when that strip is pulled away, it can lead to irritations to your sensitive skin.
Tweezing: Dr Dadu says, “Tweezing is another popular classic hair removal method in which small, pointed tweezers are used to pluck individual hair from the root surface. This process of removing facial hair is best for small areas such as the eyebrows or chin with sparse hairs but not for your face. It will hurt and take a lot of time.”
3. Irritate your skin
Whatever method you choose, removing your facial hair can be painful, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin. Moreover, you can develop burns, rashes, and itching. Using moisturiser immediately after shaving will help you avoid this.
While these are a few drawbacks to removing your facial hair, they are manageable. You can. therefore, remove facial hair to have smooth and radiant skin.
