Did you ever think that something as small as a toenail could give you so much trouble? Well, an ingrown toenail is the worst thing. It can be painful. That is why we are here with a step-by-step guide on how to remove an ingrown toenail.

What is an ingrown toenail?

If you ever notice your big toe, you’ll see that the edges of the nail keep trying to get into the skin. If skin grows over the edge of the nail and the nail continues to grow under the skin then that situation is called an ingrown toenail. It is painful as that area can get swollen or infected because the nail doesn’t have any space to grow.

Ingrown nails are usually observed on the big toe as it is a little tricky to cut because of its shape. If the nail is not cut properly on a regular basis, it could lead to an ingrown toenail. In order to prevent an ingrown toenail it is essential that you don’t cut the nail too short or otherwise the edges become rounded and grow in the direction of the skin.

If you have an ingrown toenail but it is not infected, it can be easily removed at home. But you will need to consult a doctor if you notice accumulation of any pus like fluids or develop a fever.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to remove an ingrown toenail at home:

Step 1

Don’t try to remove the ingrown toenail when it’s short as that will be difficult to do and will hurt more. Wait until it has grown at least a millimeter above the toe.

Step 2

Soak your feet in lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes, so that the nail becomes a little softer and it will be easier to cut. You can also add some salt to the water as it will help in reducing the swelling.

Step 3

Next, you need to insert a very tiny piece of cotton between your ingrown toenail and the skin, so that there is some space created for the nail cutter.

Step 4

Use a toenail clipper if you have it otherwise use the smallest nail cutter you have available at home.

Step 5

Gently pull the skin aside and cut the nail from inside. Try to reach as inside the skin as possible and voila you have successfully removed your ingrown toenail!

Note: Wear loose-fitted shoes after this and it’s best if you only wear slippers. In future also try to avoid wearing heels or shoes in which your toes are pressed for space.
