Don’t you love the festival of colours Holi? People rejoice and celebrate the festival in all its vigour as the streets turn into a rainbow of hues. While it’s all fun, colours, dance and games, there is one thing we all dread – removing the Holi colours. Sometimes, it even turns sour for some people due to colour splashing, which sometimes turns dangerous. It can also be troublesome when you try to remove the Holi colours.

Healthshots asked Dr Jaishree Sharad, Medical Director, Skinfiniti Aesthetic and Laser Clinic, Mumbai, to help you remove Holi colours safely.

If you also find removing Holi colours from your skin, hair and nails cumbersome, try these tips and tricks suggested by Dr Sharad.

1. Steer clear of harsh chemicals

One thing you should completely avoid is using harsh chemicals or soaps to remove Holi colours. Dr Sharad explains that these products contain “solvents such as acetone, bleach, and nail polish remover (acetate) can be damaging especially to the skin and can cause irritation, burns, dryness and long-term discolouration”.

You should avoid products that contain alcohol and fragrances, as these can cause even more damage, especially to sensitive skin. Choose natural products such as coconut oil instead to remove the colours effectively. Coconut oil is an emulsifying agent that helps remove Holi colours, so apply it thoroughly. You can also use baby oil or olive oil, she adds.

2. Avoid harsh cleansers

If you have been using harsh cleansers such as soap and shampoo, you should know that these products can leave your skin dry and irritated. Dr Sharad advises using a mild and natural cleanser as it will not leave your skin irritated. “Use a mild shampoo or oil-based conditioner to clean your hair. Applying oil works into the hair to loosen the colour, followed by a shampoo. Use conditioner after shampooing to give your hair a shine. You can clean your fingernails with hand wash and water, and a soft-bristled nail brush. Once clean, moisturise the nails with light oil or cream, to help restore lost moisture.”

3. Avoid scrubbing

Do you think harsh scrubbing your face can help you remove all the colours from your face? Well, Dr Sharad says that it ends up doing more harm than good to your skin. Scrubbing can damage the protective layer of your skin, leading to skin irritation. Use a mild soap solution and a soft towel to clean your face.

4. Avoid over-washing your hair

Washing your hair too often during Holi can be damaging to the scalp, as the Holi colours may weaken the hair shafts. Therefore, use a mild shampoo to gently loosen the Holi colours and rinse your hair with lukewarm water. If possible, only wash your hair once or twice during the festival.

5. Don’t use hot water

If you use hot water to clean your face, thinking it will help wash away the colour, think again! Hot water can dry out your skin and damage your hair. Use lukewarm water instead to rinse off the colours as it is more gentle and effective, advises Dr Sharad.

6. Avoid the sun

While the sun is good on other days, not when your skin is already covered with chemicals. Dr Sharad says, “Holi colours can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, and can cause sunburn. Therefore, avoid spending too much time in the sun after playing Holi. Wear sunblock while out as an extra precaution.”

So, enjoy the festival of colours without letting it harm you in any way. Wish you a Happy Holi!
