Cold pressed vs regular hair oil: What’s better for strong hair growth

Our go-to solution for hair problems has always been a tel maalish or hair oiling. And for all the right reasons too as oiling your hair at regular intervals provides much-needed miniaturisation and strength to our hair. But the golden question is what kind of oil to use: regular oils, essential oils or cold pressed oils? All are good but we are going to tell you why cold pressed hair oils top the chart and are much better than your regular hair oils!

What is cold pressed hair oil?

Cold pressed hair oils are extracted from seeds, nuts or fruits through a process that involves crushing and pressing them at low temperatures. This method of extraction ensures that the oils retain their natural nutrients and are free from harmful chemicals that are typically added to regular oils to extend their shelf life.

Are cold pressed hair oils better than regular oils?

“Cold pressed oils are definitely better than regular oils for hair and skin,” says Dr Sonal Bansal, Consultant-Dermatology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram. She supports it by saying that regular oils undergo a hydrogenation process that involves the addition of chemicals, preservatives, and other additives (for longer shelf life) that can harm your hair and skin.

On the other hand, cold pressed oils are unfiltered and not extensively processed, making them more effective and better for your hair and skin. Though they have a shorter shelf life and are more expensive, they are more effective as no nutrients have been lost from them in the process of extraction. They contain essential fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins like E and K, antioxidants, and polyunsaturated fatty acids that nourish and protect your hair.

Benefits of cold pressed hair oil

Let’s take a look at some benefits of cold pressed hair oils as shared with us by Dr Bansal:

1. Moisturises and conditions hair

Cold pressed hair oils are great for moisturizing and conditioning your hair. They penetrate deeply into the hair shaft, nourishing it from within and making it softer, smoother, and less prone to breakage. These oils are especially effective for dry, brittle, and damaged hair.

2. Promotes hair growth

While oils do not have a direct impact on hair growth or density, they do play a vital role in promoting healthy hair. Cold pressed hair oils contain nutrients that nourish and strengthen hair follicles, which in turn promotes healthy hair growth.

3. Delays aging and reduces fine lines

When applied on the skin, cold pressed hair oils can help delay aging and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. They are rich in antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, which are responsible for skin aging.

How to use cold pressed hair oil on hair

1. Apply the oil to your hair from root to tip, making sure to cover all areas of your hair.
2. Massage your scalp gently to promote blood circulation and ensure that the oil is absorbed into your hair follicles.

3. Leave the oil on for at least an hour or overnight to allow it to penetrate deeply into your hair.
4. Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo and conditioner to remove the oil.
5. Cold pressed hair oils can also be used as hair serum while styling your hair or as an ingredient in hair masks.

So, the next time you’re looking for a hair care solution, consider using cold pressed hair oil and give your hair the natural nourishment it deserves.
