In November 2022, the unemployment rate in 21 metropolitan areas out of 389 was unchanged as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
US’ national unemployment rate in November 2022 reached 3.4 per cent, not seasonally adjusted, down from 3.9 per cent a year earlier, according to US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The country’s unemployment rate was lower in November than a year earlier in 235 of the 389 metropolitan areas, while it was higher than a year earlier in 133 metropolitan areas.
A total of 150 areas in the US had jobless rates of less than 3 per cent and 2 areas had rates of at least 10 per cent. The country’s nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 95 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 294 areas, as per the latest metropolitan area employment and unemployment summary by BLS.
In November, Fargo, North Dakota, had the lowest unemployment rate, 1.5 per cent, while El Centro, California, had the highest rate, 16.7 per cent.
A total of 215 areas had November jobless rates below the US rate of 3.4 per cent, 153 areas had rates above it, and 21 areas had rates equal to that of the nation.
The largest over-the-year unemployment rate decrease in November occurred in Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey (minus 2.6 percentage points). Yuma, Arizona, had the largest over-the-year rate increase in November 2022 (5 percentage points).
Of the 51 metropolitan areas with a 2010 census population of 1 million or more, Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, Minnesota- Wisconsin, had the lowest jobless rate in November, 1.9 per cent. Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nevada, had the highest rate, 5.6 per cent.
In November, nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 95 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 294 areas. Over the year, nonfarm employment increased in 44 metropolitan areas with a 2010 census population of 1 million or more, while employment was essentially unchanged in 7 areas.
Nonfarm payroll employment in November 2022 increased over the year in 23 metropolitan divisions and was essentially unchanged in 15 divisions.
