Sometimes, you could get lost in a mind-numbing maze that is frustrating. Such circumstances can indicate that you need to rewire your brain. Doing so can help you lead a more fulfilled life and establish realistic objectives for yourself with the start of the New Year. So let’s find out how you can improve your mental health for success and positivity.
Tips for mental health
When it comes to mental health issues, most people do not view them as serious issues even when they face them. This is a significant factor contributing to the rise in mental health problems among people. To deal with a problem, it’s crucial to acknowledge it. And that’s okay if you’re going through it. We all go through various causes of stress. Some people deal with it effortlessly, some may struggle, and some may get affected by it. But let’s not forget that we all can bounce back.
So, to help you out and to discuss the tips which can help balance your mental health with the start of the new year, Health Shots spoke to Dr Jyoti Kapoor, Senior Psychiatrist, and Founder, Manasthali.
Here are 5 tips for better mental health:
1. Calm your mind
Knowing how to relax your thoughts while you’re anxious is crucial if you want to combat mental health difficulties. Try different approaches until you find one that helps you cope with negativity. Dr Kapoor says, “You might opt for a mindful activity that helps you remain calm while managing the several life threads which are running at the same time. Your mind will truly relax as a result.”
2. Communication is must
Do not disconnect yourself from your family and friends whenever you are in stressful situations. Instead, try to communicate and share your problems. “In times of stress and worry, talking about your thoughts can help normalize the topic of mental health, and you may even receive support from others,” according to Dr Kapoor. Knowing that someone is there to keep your back can help you feel less stressed and more confident.
3. Limit screen time
You should be self-regulated in terms of gadgets use and screen time. Stressing news and using social media platforms more often increases FOMO (fear of missing out) and feelings of jealousy, isolation, and inadequacy. In turn, these emotions amplify negative emotions, have an impact on your mood, and can make your existing mental health problems worse.
4. Take part in a physical activity
Physical activity that gets your blood flowing actually lifts your mood. It also aids in raising your body’s serotonin levels, or “happy hormones.” Therefore, maintaining physical health can frequently be the key to maintaining mental health as well. Make sure you engage in physical activity for at least 30 minutes per day. To improve your mood, you can also try meditation, listening to music, dancing, or going for a walk.
5. Accept your flaws
Dr Kapoor says, “Being realistic and accepting of your situation is crucial if you want to prioritise your mental health.” How? Accepting your mistakes and failures can pave the way for success in your life and success adds to happiness. Additionally, doing so might ease the pressure of being perfect and open the way for growth and betterment in life.

6. Give yourself a treat
Self-care can truly improve your mental health. To understand your needs and goals, try to spend some time by yourself. Give yourself a treat if you don’t know how to lift your mood. This can give you temporary relief.
7. Don’t shy away from getting professional help
Sometimes you might feel that the people in your life don’t have time to listen to you and your feelings or don’t truly have the ability to understand what you need and what you’re going through. In such a scenario, getting help from a professional is the best way to get out of this situation.
