When a disease hits, it doesn’t look for a specific group of people. It can affect anyone. One of the most sneaky of these diseases is Alzheimer’s, which can affect you without you even realizing it. It is the most common type of dementia that can affect anyone at any time. Did you know more than 50 million people have dementia in the world? Recently, Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth in a recent interview with Vanity Fair revealed that he has decided to take some “time off” from acting ever since he learned that he is at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

“The Avengers” actor learned about the risk of developing Alzheimer’s after undergoing some tests. He said in the interview that the revelation verified his “biggest fear” and something in him made him take some time off work.

Hemsworth discovered that he carries two copies of the gene ApoE4, one from each parent, increasing his risk of contracting the illness by eight to ten times compared to people who don’t carry both copies of the gene, as per reports. However, the actor clarified in the interview that he had not been diagnosed with the disease. He is at a heightened risk of getting diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. His purpose in highlighting the issue was to raise awareness about the disease.

He also shared the preventive strategies he is incorporating in his life to dial down the effects of Alzheimer’s. Eating a healthy diet, adequate sleep, physical exercise, sleep and stress management are some of the best methods that can help mitigate the risk if done consistently.

What is Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disease that can impair thinking and memory abilities as well as the capacity to do even the most basic tasks, as per the National Institute of Ageing. It further states that the neurological condition was named after Dr Alois Alzheimer. After discovering some alterations in the brain tissues of a woman who passed away from an uncommon mental disease in 1906. Some of the symptoms the women experienced included memory loss, linguistic difficulties, and unpredictable conduct.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease

As per the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some of the most common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease include:

  • Memory loss interfering with daily life, such as asking the same questions repeatedly or getting lost in a familiar setting.
  • Inability to make decisions
  • Finding it difficult to manage finances and pay bills
  • Inability to finish familiar work at home or at work
  • Losing things and not being able to find them
  • Mood swings or behavioural changes

Treatment of Alzheimer’s disease
