Some jobs have been generated with the starting of jute production and export of jute products from leased out mills, he said.
Bangladesh textiles and jute minister Golam Dastagir Gazi recently announced that all closed jute mills under the Bangladesh Jute Mill Corporation (BJMC) will be reopened in phases this year. While visiting Amin Jute Mill in Chittagong, he said he expects the workers of the closed mills to get opportunities to work in rent-based leased mills.
The government has already leased out three jute mills—Bangladesh Jute Mill, Narsingdi; KFD Jute Mill, Chittagong; and National Jute Mill, Sirajganj. The process to lease out three more jute mills is under way, the minister was quoted as saying by Bangladeshi media reports.
The government announced on July 1, 2020, its decision to close 25 state-owned jute mills under BJMC. It has paid Tk 3,563 crore as dues of the permanent workers of these mills till now.
