Which oil is best for curly hair?

Curly hair requires special care and attention, and choosing the right hair oil can make a big difference. Dr Mahima Aggarwal, Consultant – Dermatology, Fortis Hospital suggests some of the best oils suited for curly locks:

1. Coconut oil

“Coconut oil is a rich source of medium-chain fatty acids and antioxidants. Its low molecular weight and straight linear chain allow it to penetrate the hair shaft and prevent protein loss,” says Dr Aggarwal. Coconut oil also provides increased slip between hair strands, making it easier to detangle, smoothen, and flatten the cuticle surface, which improves the hair’s health and help maintain the appearance of your curls. It also contains antibacterial and antifungal agents that promote good hair health.

2. Almond oil

The dermatologist explains that almond oil is a rich source of vitamin E and fatty acids that are rich in double bonds. It has shown to be protective against damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays, protecting the hair from structural damage caused by sun exposure. Almond oil also keeps the hair soft and moisturized, preventing drying of your curls. It also increases the elasticity of the hair by filling the gap between cuticle cells.

3. Castor oil

Castor oil is another popular hair oil that provides moisturizing and nourishing effects. Like coconut oil, it also has germicidal actions, protecting the scalp and hair from microbial damage. “Castor oil also acts as an inhibitor of prostaglandin D2 synthase (PGD2), helping in pattern hair loss or androgenic alopecia,” says Dr Aggarwal.

4. Argan oil

Although conventionally used as a cooking oil, argan oil has been used for skin and hair care. It has sebostatic properties that regulate the sebum production of the scalp. This oil also has a very good water holding capacity, providing a moisturizing effect to your curls, keeping them bouncy.

5. Olive oil

Olive oil has been used for skin and hair care for centuries in many civilizations. Virgin olive oil is a rich source of antioxidants. Olive oil has emollient functions by sealing the cuticle and trapping the moisture inside.

However, the doctor suggests that coconut oil is considered better than olive oil in this regard. Like almond oil, olive oil also protects against ultraviolet B radiation damage. “For people suffering from psoriasis, an inflammatory condition of the scalp that causes scaling and redness in the scalp skin, olive oil has shown promising results in combination with different ingredients,” says Dr Aggarwal.

6. Fenugreek oil

Fenugreek seeds and fenugreek oil have recently gained publicity and have been shown to improve androgenic alopecia by inhibiting dihydrotestosterone. Fenugreek oil also has emollients that help strengthen and moisturize hair, apart from antifungal and antibacterial actions.

7. Sesame oil

Sesame or til oil has anti-inflammatory properties along with antioxidant effects. It has also been shown to have protective actions against UV-induced damage. Sesame oil has enhanced penetration that reaches up to the hair follicle and increases the circulation of the scalp, thereby increasing hair growth and reducing graying of hair. It moisturizes the hair follicle and prevents dryness of your curls.

So go ahead, try these hair oils and rock those curls with confidence, and let your luscious locks do the talking!
