Eighty-four per cent of the imports (292.5 million tonnes) were delivered to Germany directly from the country in which the goods were extracted or produced, according to a press release by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
Also included are imports of goods delivered directly from the country of origin to Germany and of goods which, on their way from their country of origin to Germany, transit other countries, and are possibly trans-shipped there (transit trade).
Around 348.1 million tonnes of goods to the value of 853.1 billion euros were imported to Germany from January to July 2022. While 71.5 per cent of goods imported indirectly to Germany came via the Netherlands, 71.8 per cent of imports from China and 62.7 per cent of imports from the US came directly – in imports from Russia the proportion was 79.5 per cent.
Sixteen per cent of the imports came indirectly via other countries (55.5 million tonnes). The term ‘indirectly’ means that the goods are traded or customs cleared in another country between their country of origin and Germany.
