China’s exports of leather apparel and accessories dipped to $22.768 billion in 2020 from $29.587 billion of 2019, but it bounced back to $30.884 billion in 2021, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro. The export grew over 35 per cent and breached the level of 2019. The exports were $29.800 billion in 2018 and $29.337 billion in 2017. China’s exports were valued at $25.032 billion in the first eight months of this year.
Leather goods exports from Italy decreased to $9.642 billion in 2020 from $12.413 billion in 2019. It recovered to $12.091 billion in 2021. Its exports were valued at $10.451 billion in 2018 and $9.153 billion in 2017. The country had exported leather goods worth $6.364 billion in January-June 2022.
China registered impressive growth in 2021 in terms of exports of leather apparel and accessories after the COVID-19 disruption. While Italy—which was among the countries badly hit by the pandemic,Russia and Brazil also managed to increase their leather apparel and accessories exports last year, India’s exports could not reach the pre-COVID level.
Russia’s exports of leather products fell to $65.535 million in 2020 from $68.525 million in 2019. It increased to $71.718 million in 2021. The country had exported leather apparel and accessories worth $54.217 million in 2018, and $46.625 million in 2017, as per TexPro. However, Russia’s war with Ukraine disrupted its exports again this year.
Leather apparel and accessories exports from Brazil decreased to $29.493 million in 2020, compared to $36.980 million of 2019. The exports recovered to $37.764 million in 2021, which was higher than that of 2019. Its exports were recorded at $29.922 million during January-August 2022.
However, India’s exports could not recover in 2021 to the pandemic level. India’s exports dipped to $1.861 billion in 2020 from $2.526 in 2019. Its exports bounced back to $2.364 billion in 2021. But the exports could not touch the level of 2019. The country’s exports were $2.488 billion in 2018 and $2.420 billion in 2017. India had exported leather products worth $1.642 billion in the first seven months of 2022.
